A terrible tragedy unfolded on Tuesday afternoon after a 22-month-old boy was thought to be accidentally shot by his step-father inside a Fineview apartment building. A Pittsburgh police officer who was nearby to the incident responded shortly before 5 p.m. at the Allegheny Dwellings in Sandusky Court. He emerged with a bleeding toddler and joined paramedics as they rushed the boy to Allegheny General Hospital in the North Side. Shortly thereafter, neighbors could see police taking the boy’s step-father into custody, placing him in the back of a squad car and taking him downtown to be questioned. It was a very emotional time for everyone there, including officers and witnesses. The little boy died less than a half hour later, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office. Police are charging the 30-year-old man with homicide and child endangerment for acting “negligently and recklessly” with a gun, according to authorities. There is not yet an explanation as to what the man was doing with the 9 mm pistol when it discharged. The first officer on the scene told reporters that as soon as he got to the top of the steps at the apartment, the baby’s step-father handed the child to him. He says the man in question was beside himself, yelling and screaming after the incident. A person in charge of the building said that the boy’s step-father was a good man and that he could be seen strolling the baby everyday through the neighborhood When things like this happen, it’s a terrible and unfortunate tragedy, but accidents do happen and when they do, those involved will be in need of an attorney who understands federal homicide and manslaughter laws and who has been working to help others in these types of situations for a very long time.
