Drug charges against IUP student found with 20-plus pounds of pot

Police have arrested a 24-year-old student of Indiana University of Pennsylvania after a traffic stop led them to find twenty pounds of marijuana upon further investigation. Police believe the drugs have an estimated value in the streets of at least $115,000. Other estimators believe the dealer stood to make a great deal more than that. Upon questioning, police uncovered the man’s drug connection to New Jersey, but no further details have been provided as to whether or not it has anything to do with organized crime. He is currently being charged with possession and possession with intent to deliver. Police told reporters that upon pulling the vehicle over at around 3 a.m. Monday morning, several of the passengers looked as though they were attempting to hide something beneath a seat. Further investigation bore a vacuum-packed bag carrying $15,000 cash. After questioning the other occupants of the vehicle–who have not yet been identified–police discovered that they had just delivered a package containing marijuana to a home on Oak Street in Indiana. After approval for a warrant, police went to the home and searched it, as well as a 2007 BMW that was parked there. Inside the car, police found twenty, one-pound bricks of marijuana. Another car at the residence was also searched and revealed another half-pound stash of marijuana. The driver of the car initially pulled over was arraigned in front of District Judge Guy Haberl and placed at the Indiana County Jail. His bail is currently set at $100,000. His preliminary hearing is also set to come before Judge Haberl. Drug charges of this caliber are no joke in Pennsylvania. The suspect could face up to several months, if not years, in jail, depending on what other charges are brought up. The other occupants in the vehicle and at the home on Oak Street are also likely going to be charged, but nothing has been reported as filed as of yet. If you have been arrested for possession of marijuana, you will need a quality criminal defense attorney such as Gary Gerson to represent you in court.
