Cal U football players arrested for assault
Criminal defense for assault is a fairly common thing in western PA and throughout the United States, but when five promising young athletes at a local college are arrested for assault, it’s a story to which everyone wants answers. California University of Pennsylvania has cancelled this week’s football game after five of its players—ages 19 to 22—were arrested during practice on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred early that morning, shortly after 2 a.m., when the five young men in question beat a 30-year-old man unconscious. California borough police told reporters that the young men are charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, harassment, and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. They were arraigned at around 4 p.m. on Thursday in front of the local magistrate. The men were sent to Washington County Correctional Facility on $500,000 bond each. Their preliminary hearing is set for 17 November. The man the Cal Univ. football players allegedly beat to the point of severe brain damage was rushed to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh to be treated, but his condition is still unknown. Witnesses told police that there was an argument between one of the players and the victim’s girlfriend. The argument began outside of Spuds restaurant, along Wood Street in California. Witnesses say that when the man attempted to stop the argument between one of the suspects and the man’s girlfriend, the other suspects stepped in and began to beat on the victim, stomping on the back of his head until he was unconscious. The California University of Pennsylvania interim president obviously suspended the students; however, he has also cancelled the football for this Saturday against Gannon. Owners of Spuds say that they will be closing earlier from now on to reduce the chances of instances like this, but they say that any rumors that they will be closing for good are completely false.
